MNGT 5650: Instructor expectations
MNGT 5650 Instructor expectations
We need our MNGT 5650 instructors to understand and adopt the ADR framework in teaching this course. This framework differentiates Webster's strategy course from other universities as it provides a higher level of integration among concepts by focusing on strategic decision making (to commit resources.)
This course will explain 'strategy' as resource movement and counter-movement, and provide a framework of strategic thinking that may be applied to any given strategic situation, but instructors will need to take the time to learn this framework so that you can clarify for students when ambiguity arises, and it will. Use the framework as it makes the explanation much easier, and reduces ambiguity, that's what it's there for and as a teaching tool it works quite well. The full ADR framework should be explained during the first two weeks of the course, but then refer back to it in every lecture and every discussion as it all builds around this core idea. The ADR framework is the 'touchstone' for the new course, so please refer back to it to demonstrate its application for students.
It is the goal of the Management faculty to get our students to acquire this deeper understanding of strategy and strategic thinking than they had previously considered. Explain to your students that strategic thinking is a learnable skill, but it takes some thought and practice to develop this skill. This course provides both the theory and the hands-on practice to develop the skill.
This means the Management Department needs instructors who can not only explain strategy theory, but also can teach this theory using the Capstone Simulation. All instructors are required to be trained on the simulation prior to teaching the course. Training is available for Webster instructors at capsim.com. Contact Eric.Smith@capsim.com to set up this training. Or call 877-477-8787.
