Canvas Overview

Canvas allows you to have all of your course content in one location for your students, allows them to submit assignments, see their grades, and communicate with their faculty. In order for you to prepare your students for success, your course must be ready to go before the students are loaded. In this training, you will find several videos demonstrating the basics of Canvas.

You may use the links above to go a specific topic, or simply use the Next button to navigate through the training.

As you begin to think about how to reshape your course to be ready for remote instruction, please consider the following:

  • Consult with your department or campus about any requirements or expectations for remote teaching.
  • Examine your lesson plans and course learning outcomes and plan for what could transfer online, what should be done synchronously, and what may need revisions
  • Create a framework for how your instruction will work.
    • What are the basic elements needed for the weekly learning objectives?

If you've never done this before, consider that you will want to:

  • Add content in the form of files, pages, and modules
  • Create assignments, which in Canvas includes the use of the Assignments, Quizzes, and Discussion tools
  • Modify your Course Homepage to provide navigation and expectations for students
