Gradebook - Start at the Assignments Page

The Gradebook is the place for instructors to input and distribute grades for students. Grades for each assignment can be calculated as points, percentages, complete or incomplete, and letter grades.

The Gradebook is driven by the assignments that you create.
Assignments, graded discussions, and quizzes must all be created first, in order for them to show up in the Gradebook. Columns are automatically created in the Gradebook when you create and publish assignments, graded discussions, and graded quizzes and surveys.

Assignments Page Overview

As we just mentioned, the Gradebook is driven by your assignments which all reside on your Assignments Index page so let's take a look there first. (See the Assignments video for specifics on creating an assignment.) At the top of the Assignments Index page, we see several buttons.

+ Group at the top of the page will enable the grouping of your assignments. You may want to create groups of assignments such as written assignments, discussions, final project, activities, etc. The groups you create will be represented in the Gradebook. You can move previously created assignments into their respective groups by "grabbing" the line of dots to the left of the assignment title and dragging the assignment into the group.

protipAdding groups to your Assignments page would also be the way to initiate the creation of weighted grading.

Instructors can create assignments using the large blue +Assignment button at the top of the page.

The Action button (the one with the 3 vertical dots) is used to access additional features. In the location indicated above, the top of the assignments page, instructors can do the following:

  • Bulk edit all assignment dates
  • Initiate the weighting of the assignment groups

Now, let's take a look at an assignment group in the image below.

assignment group or add

You will see the name of the Assignment group at the top of each group.

In the group heading, you will also have access to:

  • See the % of weighted grading assigned (if applicable),
  • The + button to add an assignment directly to the assignment group
  • The Action button (the one with the 3 vertical dots) to edit, delete, or move the assignment group.

Looking a bit closer at an individual assignment, we can view the following information:

  • Assignment name
  • Assignment type (assignment, discussion, quiz)
  • Assignment due date and availability dates
  • Assignment point value

assignment and action button

Over to the right side of the screen, you will see a green circle with a checkmark if the assignment has been published (gray circle with a slash if not published) and the action button.

In this case, the action button gives you the ability to:

  • Edit, duplicate, more or delete assignment
  • Use the Direct Share options of send to... or copy to... another course or instructor.

Remember that the Gradebook is being driven by this Assignments page. Movement of an assignment on this page directly affects the placement of the assignment column in the Gradebook. Moving an assignment or assignment group down the page means the column in the Gradebook will move to the right.
