Gradebook - Weighted Grading

Webster University Teaching Resource Center

Introduction to Weighted Grading

On the previous pages, we learned that the Gradebook is driven by the assignments that you create.  Instructors can tell the Canvas system to automatically weight grades in the Gradebook by setting up the weighting  on the Assignments Index page by following these steps:

  1. Create your assignment groups
  2. Move the assignments into their respective groups
  3. Use the action button(the one with the 3 vertical dots) at the top level to inform the system that weighting will be enabled.

You can set your percentages to reflect the grading criteria that is set in your syllabus. Make sure it adds up to 100%!

To set up weighted grading, click on the Action button at the top of the Assignments Index page and choose Assignment Group weights. On the next screen, check the box to weight the grades as a % of the final grades.

When you have your groups in Assignments with weighting designated for each group, a column is automatically added to your Gradebook to do the calculations. You are not required to use weighting to have the assignments groups appear in the Gradebook.
