Assignments and Gradebook - Try It!

Use the Assignments area in your course to setup your Gradebook. Each of the assessment tools - Assignments, Quizzes and Discussions - will all be available on the Assignments page and will feed into the GradeBook.

Rubrics and SpeedGrader will help to create an efficient grading experience and help you to clarify expectations and improve feedback for students.

Canvas Option: create assignments using the Assignments function on Canvas and have students submit their work in form of file upload; deadline and grading rubric can be set-up in advance.

Canvas Option 1: Recreate assessment as a Quiz in Canvas.

  • You can limit the time on a quiz for timed assessment.
  • Multiple types of questions available: multiple choice, multiple answers, fill in the blank, true/false, matching, essay, file upload.

Presentation / Performance

Synchronous option
Students can use the screen sharing function in WebEx to show presentation materials such as slides; consider recording the session to review later or for grading.

Asynchronous option
Students can record themselves making the presentation and then attach or upload to the assignment or discussion.

Instructions to Try It!

This is optional, but if you would like to put practice into play, use your sandbox to try using the tools. If you have access to your live course, you can work in there instead. The links below go to Canvas Guides.

  1. Create a quiz  (Links to an external site.)or a survey (Links to an external site.) with at least two questions of different types to it, such as multiple choice and essay questions.
    • Link to your homepage or add to a module.
  2. Create an assignment (Links to an external site.) 
    • Link to your homepage or add to a module.
  3. Add a rubric to the assignment (Links to an external site.)
  4. Create an Assignments group (Links to an external site.) (such as "Written Assignments", "Discussions", "Exams")

Then leave student view and go to the SpeedGrader (Links to an external site.) to grade the assignment and leave feedback.  You can then check out the Grades (Links to an external site.) area in both teacher and student view.
