Course Organizational Strategies

Modules and Pages are one way to organize the content of your course. Modules are like the drawers of a filing cabinet- they can be the backbone of your organization when set up to house your content. Pages are like the files or folders in your Module, if you choose to use them.

This is where you may need to start thinking critically about your organization – just what do you want to have on the homepage? Certainly not everything since we want the navigation to be easy for the students. Here are 3 ideas.

Idea #1
Create a layout with links taking students to the Files area for access to documents

How To

  • Open "Files" in the Course Navigation
    • Upload all resources and documents at once OR
    • Upload when needed
  • Create folders for your content to keep organized and make navigation easier for students–
    • By weeks, by type? It’s up to you.
  • Upload documents, presentations, etc.

Idea  #2

Create "Pages" where you can link the content into the page for the students. Canvas will let you create Pages for your content, instead of just leaving the content in the folders in Files. Your "Home Page" or "Front Page" is just one type of "Page" in Canvas so you can use that to link to additional pages.

How To

  • Create a new page for your course by going to Pages,
  • Click on View all Pages, and then
  • Click on + Page.

This will give you a blank Canvas page where you can add text, images, and links to content. You will always be able to find your pages here in the Pages area but students can’t so you will need to either link to the homepage or add to a module.

Idea #3

Create a layout with links to the first page of modules you will create. Create as many as needed but be sure to tie to your organizational strategy
