Universal Design for Learning

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is taking the same principles of Universal Design (in architecture) and applying it to... you guessed it: Learning!

UDL has three primary components:

  1. Multiple means of representation
  2. Multiple means of engagement
  3. Multiple means of action and expression

Not One-Size-Fits-All

Universal Design for Learning focuses on how to design lessons and learning activities in a way that promotes and allows customization and flexibility. Universal Design isn't about developing a single solution for everyone, but developing approaches that people can select in order to reach the same solution. However, there are times where it's difficult to add in that flexibility and that's ok. As you explore the principles of UDL focus on the areas where you can add in flexibility and allow students to customize their learning experience.

For instance, if you're teaching writing, you're not going to be able to add flexibility in terms of assessments (they need to write!). But, you might be able to add in flexibility when it comes to what they write about or what pieces of writing you assign.

CAST's UDL Guidelines (Links to an external site.) provides a great framework in which to explore different ways to apply the principles of UDL. We'll also explore each of the three principles in the lessons to follow and discuss ways they can be incorporated into non-instructional settings.
