SMART Objectives

When writing objectives, make sure they're SMART:

  • Specific
Objectives should answer the questions: who? what? where? when? why? Students know exactly what you're expecting when your objectives are specific.
  • Measurable
Objectives should lead directly to assessments. Look at the verb in your objective -- can it be measured? It's not possible directly measure if a student "understands" or "knows" something. You can measure if a student can "identify," "define," "select the appropriate...,"
  • Attainable
Is your objective within the realm of possibility given your student population and the 8- or 9-week time frame? Or given the 1-week time frame weekly learning modules?
  • Relevant
Is it clear that the objectives are tied into the larger course outcomes? Are the objectives tied to results? Will attaining the goals further the students' skills in the field, both academically and professionally?
  • Time-based
Does the objective include a deadline or time frame?
