Jose's Scenario

Situation

Jose is a 43 year old Captain in the US ARMY currently stationed in Ft. Leavenworth, KS. He is an IT specialist and is looking to transition to the private sector after retirement in two years. He is very interested in Webster University’s MA in Information Technology Management program. Since Jose needs to plan around being deployed to Germany for a minimum of six months, the MA in ITM would work well with his active duty orders. Jose is also looking forward to enrolling in WSBT 5000 Career Success in the 21st Century, as well as continuing to receive support through working with the Career Management provided by Right Management. He anticipates WSBT 5000 will help him effectively translate his military experience into a corporate skill set while networking with like-minded professionals.

Advising

During the conversation Jose has with his Academic Advisor, a degree plan is agreed upon which shows the following:jose2.jpgJose learns that the Webster University Library offers access to a wide variety of books, databases, videos, and online assistance that could be extremely helpful in his degree. Since it has been over 20 years since he last wrote a paper, Jose anticipates needing writing assistance so he contacts the Online Writing Center (OWC) for help. The Online Writing Center coaches read students’ papers and various assignments in order to provide the necessary feedback to guide students toward effective communication. Coaches will make suggestions, but they expect students to assess the nature of the problem and make an informed decision as how to revise.

While deployed, Jose registered for his first online course, ITM 5200 Project Management of Information Technology. His advisor informs him to check his Webster e-mail regularly since the Online Learning Center (OLC) will be sending information about multiple training and orientation webinars, reminders, updates, and tutorials prior to the term in order to lessen the angst surrounding accessing Connections and ordering textbooks, and invitations for new students to participate in an online training course to better familiarize themselves with the online learning environment.

Advisors will be able to monitor student success via Dropout Detective, a student retention solution that works with our current learning management system to provide a "risk index" score for each student that will calculate a student's potential success during a course.

Information about Dropout Detective will be included in the next module, but first, let's take a moment to discuss the scenarios.  Click next to reach the discussion board...
