Table of Contents - Canvas Basics

Webster University Teaching Resource Center

Canvas tools can be used in all four of the teaching formats which are outlined below.

Use the Table of Contents to go directly to a page or use the 'Next' button at the bottom of the page to continue through the module. This module is required and there will be a knowledge check at the end.

Face-to-Face/Lecture

Canvas may be used for some components (such as sharing readings or collecting assignments) in order to enhance live, in-person instruction. Instructors teaching in this format should put as much material into their Canvas shell as they can from the beginning of the course, since these courses may be asked to transition to the remote/WebNet+ format in response to local health guidelines.

Remote / WebNet+

With this format, instructors will use Canvas to deliver assignments, quizzes, and additional content to students. Instructors must also use the Gradebook in Canvas and the syllabus tool.

Fully Online

In this format, instructors use Canvas for delivery of assignments, discussions, quizzes, pages, modules, multimedia interactions, etc. Only courses that have gone through the approval process should be taught in the Fully Online format.

Hybrid

This format includes a mix of real-time synchronous learning (either in person or through video conferencing) and some activities through self-guided Canvas-based instruction. Instructors must use Canvas to deliver assignments, quizzes, and additional content to students. Instructors must also use the Gradebook in Canvas and the syllabus tool (Concourse, for certain Schools and Colleges).
