Providing Feedback

Feedback on student submissions and participation is essential for their success in your course. Feedback not only provides information to your students about their progress, it is also a valuable communication tool, and sometimes the only way that your students get to hear directly from you, one-on-one.

Canvas has several tools for you to provide robust feedback to your students, and these tools are useful regardless of the format you teach in.

Video feedback in Announcements (for the entire class) or in SpeedGrader (for individuals)  is a great tool for connecting with your students. This can enhance the level of interaction, especially if you're teaching remotely. One way to do this would be to provide feedback on homework or discussions that covers the overall class submissions using the Announcements tool. Students really like this type of feedback as they get to hear your voice and feel how invested you are in their success.

SpeedGrader

SpeedGrader is a tool that is available in Quizzes, Assignments and Discussions. You can use SpeedGrader to provide feedback by including written annotations on the actual student submission, or in comments fields at the bottom. The tools are at the top of the screen and you can use them to mark up your students' papers much as you would with a pen or with "Track changes" in a Word document--you can highlight, strikethrough, add comments, circle, etc.

Rubrics

Rubrics that are created within Canvas can be viewed in SpeedGrader (see above)  and used as an efficient way to grade and provide feedback about meeting the expectations of the assignment. They are created via the Rubrics tool which is available in the Course Navigation.

Rubrics can be reused in similar assignments in one or many courses. Rubrics can give students a clear sense of what is expected for the assignment or discussion, and can streamline your grading.
